A powerful tool to build your small business whether it be an online business or an offline business is through article marketing. In this article, I will provide you with several steps that will help you reach your potential customers.
The first step in writing an article is picking a specific topic about your business that would have interest to your customers. For example, if you paint houses, a good topics for an article is "choosing the right colors for your home" or "the best way to find a reputable home painter". Here's another example related to a unique service I saw advertised on the window of a car driving next to me. The service was organizing a slumber party. It made me curious and I really wanted to know more about it. The owner might write an article about the pitfalls of having a slumber party or the key steps to organizing a fun-filled slumber party.
The idea here is to write something useful but not overwhelm the reader with too much information.
Once you have written your article, you complete it with a call to action. This is your opportunity to give the reader a chance to start a relationship with you. A call to action will include one or two links to your web page. The link you provide should take the reader to either a free report or something that you think they will find useful. It should also have similar content to what your original article was about.
Once you have the reader follow through with a call to action hopefully you will have captured their information and you able you are able start relationship with them. The type of information you provide and capture will vary between businesses. The painter might want to capture a phone number and reach out to the person so he can provide more information and answer questions. Distributing your articles (and press releases) in the right way is vital. These media releases are only half the process of getting publicity in media publications. Just like a website getting more sales from targeted visitors, you'll receive more benefit from readers of your media releases who are targeted and more inclined to buy from you.
To find the best way of distributing your articles, you first have to work out which method of distribution will result in the most publicity from your target market and this obviously requires you to work out just who they are. Research your past clients, carry out some questionnaires and use some good old common sense to answer the one simple question: "Who will buy what I have to offer?"

After this you can of course wait for a response or result. If you wait a few days to a week and see no result, just give them a call or drop an E-mail and ask how things are going.
Getting your article or press release out there as wide as possible always gives it the best chance of reaching media exposure. Now before you say that this is just semantics, consider which one you are holding in your thoughts as you write an article or an email. Traffic sounds like some anonymous group of people. Visitors sound like people, even individual people.
I've come to favor the term visitors because this allows me to hold real actual people in my mind as I write articles, emails and create products. I believe this makes a difference in the "know, like and trust" factor. When you are writing to traffic I think the potential know, like and trust factor is low. When you are writing to visitors I think the potential know, like and trust factor is high.
The really great thing is that article marketing is a powerful way to bring visitors to your web sites and blogs.

How Do You Become Perceived as the Author With Authority?
Many online article authors wish to become a perceived authority in a subject in order to promote an online business. Thus they write articles that will attract a specific niche of reader, who hopefully will then come to their website and buy something or sign up services. Becoming an authority in your market niche is important, but becoming a perceived authority is a little problematic because either you are an authority or you are not.
It is my contention that there are simply too many posers online, folks who have never really done anything, but can put finger to keyboard and bang out articles. Whereas they may be perceived as an authority, are they really? Do they really know their stuff? The reader may perceive them to be an authority due to a few articles, but the only way to know for sure is to corner them and ask them a question about the subject and see if they truly know what they are talking about.
Since generally this cannot be done, an online article author can often be perceived as an authority, when they are really not at all. Does this mean their article is valueless? No, not necessarily, the article may very well contain important facts that are not easily found elsewhere. It could indeed be extremely timely information and information that the readers are very happy to acquire. Still this does not one an authority, only a perceived authority you see. Are you comfortable being only a perceived authority or do you want to be the real deal?
