Online Article Marketing - To be Thin or Not to be Thin - The Question

Should your online articles have a lot of content or be thinly written? Many online articles authors are upset that other others write trite thinly written articles and these critics of short articles do indeed make a very good point indeed. This is problematic and troubling and they have a right to be a little frustrated over this issue.

One thing I find interesting is the number of business articles that are written by folks who have never really done anything in business and yet write articles as if they know everything about business. It seems that just because someone can write a decent article with good sentence structure, does not necessarily make them a knowledge based authority or expert. Just because an author writes a good grammatically correct article does not mean they know what they are talking about.

When we talk about reader perception of an author's credentials, it seems we ought to also talk about deception, trickery or even questionable marketing ploys as well. You see just because someone has a degree in business, well it is not the same as winning in the free-market. If one can only succeed on the key board should they be allowed to give advice as if reality based to those who are searching for real answers?

Another point, I would like to make about the online article author critic's astute observation is this; often online article writer's write thin content as to not give away too much, only enough to entice the reader to click to their website. This has also been recommended in the many eBooks on Online Article Marketing and this constitutes a "Catch 22" for some authors and they will need to work this out for themselves?

Do they write thinly done articles with minimal content, just enough to wet the appetite or do they go full on and write one of my 1500 word articles and explain everything in depth. Having written many of both types for various reasons, this might also become part of this conversation between article authors and their critics in upcoming dialogues?

And also as part of the conversation, where is that line to be drawn. I mean I can probably write an entire eBook on just about any subject I have 10 or more articles in or one or more white papers on half of those categories. Yet, this is an article submission site? And the critics you have to admit bring up a really good point. Everyone wants to be thin, but is it unhealthy for your online article marketing endeavors to be too thin or too rich in content? When trying to do article marketing, you need to know that it's better if your article is shorter rather than longer. No one is going to sit in their chairs all night reading a long article. Nobody wants that. If you want to make a long article, make it an ebook instead, don't make it an article.

Articles tend to show more URL clicks and views when the article is shorter. That's because people actually have enough time to sit down and read a small article rather than a long one. Haven't you ever wondered why longer articles don't get as many clicks? When it's a long article, the reader tends to become bored and decides to skip around, not really understanding what the author is reading, and thus getting mixed messages and finally clicking out of the article.

Longer articles also look less professional. Some might think that they look more professional, but in this case, they're not. Articles that are actually professional are articles that have the most amount of information in the less amount of space. When article writers write long articles, they tend to stray away from their topic or beat around the bush, and this will make your reader irritated and will make them want to click out. So keep your articles short and to the point.

When writing a short article, try to aim from 250-500. The average successful article is from 300-500. But keeping it at 250-500 will be just as good, as long as you have enough valuable information in it. So watch yourself in your word count box when writing an article. Try to make it below 500 or above 300. This will be great practice for you when writing your articles.

Keep your articles short and to the point. Don't think that longer is better. In the case of article marketing, the shorter it is, the better.

Tip 1 -- no resource box -- believe it or not I've seen people leave the resource box blank. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

Solution -- at least get something in there.

Tip 2 -- your virtual ego wall -- write down every accomplishment you've ever made. List your degrees, books written, and how much your parents really like you.

Solution -- the resource box is not about you. A great resource box is all about the reader and what's in it for them.

Tip 3 -- convince the reader you are an expert -- talk about all your years experience and how you are in the expert in this area.

Solution -- if you have not convinced the reader that you are an expert in your article, it's way too late to do it now. Again, resource box is not about you it's about your reader.

Tip 4 -- do not ask the reader to do anything. I fail to take someone who has just read information from you and invite them to do anything else at all.

Solution -- create compelling call to action that takes the reader by the hand and not only asks them shows them what to do next.

Tip 5 -- do not include any active links back to your website or blog. Treat the reader like someone watching the final episode of the Sopranos and just leave them hanging.

Solution -- include at least one active link back to your website or blog so the reader can engage you further.

The scariest thing is a blank page; so when you first start writing articles, just write. That's it, scrap the brain storming and just write. When you start, you will realise it's easier than you think.

Remember that when optimizing keywords, your article still sounds like natural writing to someone reading your article. Also be careful not to repeat the same keyword to many times in one paragraph. Follow this advise and you will be on your way to a successful article marketing campaign.

Article Marketing - Re-purpose Your Articles in Your Blog and Build "Article Intrigue"

Article marketing is simply getting your information in front of as many eyes as possible in as many consumable forms as possible.

One of the best and easiest ways to do this is to re-purpose your articles in your blog.

The only real challenge is that at 300 to 500 words most articles are too long for your average blog post.So here aretwo ways to create several blog posts out of one article and build a little "article intrigue" while your are at it.

1. Split your article into three separate blog posts over an interval of three days or longer. This is especially simple if you have made 3 major points in your article. It can be done with any article though. In the first post use about a third of your article. At the end of the post, tell the reader a bit about what to expect in the next blog post. And so on.

2. Another great way to do this is to use the "read more" function on your blog. The read more icon on Word Press blogs looks like a sheet of paper cut in half. This is essentially what you are doing. At some point in your article place the read more command and your article stops there, creating a small post. When the reader clicks on the "read more" link they are taken to a new page and the rest of the article.

Bonus tip: To build in a little "article intrigue" place the read more link in the middle of a thought such as "something works really well for me is" and then place the read more link right there.
